Volusion Review

You’ve probably seen a commercial or a different Volusion review stating how easy it is to build an online store with Volusion. Many of us have and it really seems like the perfect ecommerce platform.

Volusion isn’t the platform it once used to be. It has flaws. However, it’s still one of the top ecommerce platforms available.

The cart has an array of ecommerce tools and an affordable pricing structure that make their platform very appealing. That’s why their platform hosts over 40,000 online stores and has processed over $18 billion in merchant sales.

So is their cart for you? Let’s find out.

Who is Volusion good for?

The cart is very flexible. It’s going to be a good choice for nearly any type of store out there. As you can see, even large online stores like Intel and 3M use Volusion to sell their products online.

And with no transaction fees, you’ll be able to keep more of your profits. That’s always a good thing.

The only problem with Volusion is bandwidth. Larger stores with a lot of traffic will run into a problem here. Fortunately, they offer an Enterprise solution that’ll fix that problem.

Either way it shouldn’t be much of a drawback.

Ease of use

Volusion isn’t as easy to work with as Shopify is but it’s very close. The admin dashboard is clean and you shouldn’t have any issues navigating around. The customer frontend is straightforward and your customers shouldn’t have problems shopping around your store.

If this is your first time working with Volusion, it may take you some time to learn the ins and outs of the platform.

After you get accustomed to the platform, you’ll be able to carry most of the administrative tasks right from the admin dashboard.

Design options

Volusion offers both free and premium ecommerce templates. There are a total of 75 templates but only 16 are free. And out of the 16 free templates, 6 are responsive across. Premium templates range from $50 to $895.

Here are examples of the free store templates you’ll be able to use:

Volusion gives you a simple file editor to edit all of your store files. It’s a simple text editor and not a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor. Other ecommerce platforms like CoreCommerce offer a neat and ridiculously easy-to-use drag and drop editor.

You’ll have the ability to add a text or graphic logo to your store with ease, as well as a custom favicon.

I found that if you’re not a developer and are uncomfortable using html and css, it may be difficult to edit the templates to your liking.

Recurring billing

Volusion is one of only a handful of ecommerce platforms that has built-in recurring billing. For the ones that don’t know what recurring billing is, it allows you to sell subscription-based products.

So if your plan is to sell subscription products, recurring billing is going to come in handy.

However, if you don’t plan on selling these kind of products, this feature won’t do you any good.

App store
If you find yourself looking for more features, Volusion’s versatile app store has it covered. They offer both free and premium third-party apps that you can install with ease.

Each app will add different functionality to your online store. You’ll be able to integrate an email marketing service, work with Doba to source products, install various payment gateways, and add a customer referral program to increase sales.

Mobile ecommerce

If you aren’t targeting mobile users, you’re probably losing money, lots of it. Every year, there’s an increase in the number of mobile shoppers. This can either be good or bad.

While only a handful of their templates are responsive, they offer a free mobile ecommerce tool that automatically optimizes your store for mobile devices. All you have to do is enable the tool from the admin dashboard. By enabling this neat tool, your customers will have a simple shopping experience.

At this time, mobile ecommerce is compatible with iOS and Android devices.

There’s also a Volusion mobile app that you can download and manage your business on the go. It’s a very simple interface that spices things up a little.

Search engine optimization

All of Volusion’s plans come with built-in SEO options. You’ll be able to use multiple snippets (things like product star ratings, product price and product availability) that will be visible on search engines. You can also add basic SEO options such as friendly store URLs, meta page titles and keywords.

If you’ve never messed with search engine optimization tools in the past, you’ll find it confusing at first. It’s pretty easy to learn though.

Support resources

I’ve heard and seen it all. Volusion support sucks. Volusion support rocks. No platform is perfect and we’ll always see mixed views. All of my interactions with their support have been excellent. Their knowledge of ecommerce exceeded my expectations.

The company offers a 24/7 technical support department that can be reached via phone, live chat, and standard email ticketing. The $15/month plan doesn’t include phone support.

Priority support with shorter wait times is available on their $75/month and $135/month plans, respectively.

An array of additional support resources are available that are extremely informative and easy to follow. There’s also an active ecommerce blog that I found very useful.

Prior to writing this Volusion review, I decided to re-test their support system. My chat request was answered within a minute or so. The representative answered all of my questions promptly and directed me to additional resources that I may find interesting.

After about an hour, one of Volusion’s representatives reached out to me via phone. He advised me that the call was a follow-up to ensure that I was satisfied with the chat support that I received earlier. He left me his number in case I have any further questions. Things like this go a long way.

Hosting, security, and backup options

Like all other top ecommerce platforms, Volusion is a hosted shopping cart that includes web hosting. So you don’t have to purchase separate web hosting but I do recommend purchasing a custom domain name from NameCheap. Their hosting is optimized and built for online stores.

Their hosting utilizes the latest content delivery network technology to get the most out of their servers. Volusion’s hosting uptime stands at 99.9%, which is insanely good.

Their ecommerce platform utilizes the latest security technology to protect all of the sensitive data being transmitted on your store. Volusion is PCI Certified and all plans offer a free IP firewall for increased security.

And if you want to take things to the next level, you’ll be able to purchase an SSL certificate through Volusion.

Since your store is hosted on their servers, they’ll create a back-up for your store on occasion. You’re going to have the option to do this on your own too, which is probably a good idea.

Volusion pros

  • There are no transaction fees, regardless of the plan you choose.
  • Their plans offer unlimited storage space.
  • Volusion’s platform is very easy to use.
  • You’ll get access to a comprehensive list of ecommerce features that you won’t find anywhere else.
  • Volusion earned an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau.
  • 24/7 English-speaking technical support.

Volusion cons

  • All plans offer limited bandwidth. Bandwidth overage fees are set at $7 per GB over your limit.
  • A blogging platform isn’t built into the platform.
  • Only a handful of templates are responsive.

Is Volusion good for my online store?

There are always going to be minor bumps in the road. There isn’t a platform out there that’s flawless.

Over the years and with all of the competition, Volusion has managed to build a solid reputation. Their platform has proven that it’s capable of hosting small to large online stores.

If you’re in the market for a shopping cart that’s flexible, easy to work with, and offers a reputable technical support, you might want to give Volusion a try. A free trial is available to give you a chance to test out their platform.

So is their platform good for your online store? Yes.
