Bigcommerce Review

There are plenty of Bigcommerce reviews on the internet and we have our own unique view of why Bigcommerce is an ecommerce platform that’s worth trying, if you’re serious about creating an online store. Our unbiased Bigcommerce review will show you the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Creating an online store isn’t something everyone can easily do, though. However, with an increasing number of shoppers looking for deals online, it’s worth giving it a shot.

Bigcommerce gives you a lot of flexibility with an array of tools that have the potential of taking your store to the next level. That’s why their platform powers over 95,000 online businesses.

Here’s a short Bigcommerce review that I recently recorded:

Bigcommerce is ideal for?

Due to its incredible flexibility and very few limitations, Bigcommerce is going to be a good fit for almost every store out there – regardless of its size.

Bigcommerce was made with the future in mind. Their platform offers a wide selection of built-in features and is capable of both minor and advanced customization tasks. It’s incredibly easy to use, so you don’t have to be a tech-savvy user to build an online store.

Ease of use

As mentioned above, Bigcommerce offers a comprehensive set of tools that are easy to work with. Of course, with all new things, you’ll have to invest some time to learn how everything works, especially if it’s your first time using a hosted ecommerce platform.

Once you learn the basics, you’ll be able to launch a store with very little effort.

And if you get stuck or run into a problem, you can always reach out to their support team for guidance via phone, email, and live chat.

Design options

Bigcommerce offers both free and premium ecommerce templates. Their premium templates start at around $120. Here are some free templates that you’ll be able to use on your store:

Bigcommerce Templates

Each template can be edited using HTML, CSS, and via their live style editor. So if you aren’t afraid to work with HTML and CSS, you’ll find that there’s plenty of flexibility on what you can accomplish.

In addition, you have the option to download your template files and work on them offline. This is convenient for the ones that plan on hiring a developer to design their store.

From the design page, you can also upload your store logo, build a homepage slider, integrate social sharing buttons, and restructure your store email snippets.

Abandoned cart saver

The abandoned cart saver is an exceptional tool that’s a must for every online store. It’s known for recovering approximately 15% of lost sales.

Whenever a customer leaves the checkout page without completing the order, the abandoned cart saver will send a series of emails enticing the customer to go back and complete the order.

For example, let’s say 100 customers start the checkout process for a $100 order and leave without completing the entire checkout. That’s $10,000 in lost sales. The abandoned cart saver will bring back about 15 customers (or 15%) and help you recover $1,500. I don’t know about you, but that’s a lot of money.

Unfortunately, the abandoned cart saver isn’t available on the $29.95/month plan.

App store

Bigcommerce is already a feature-rich ecommerce platform and there are only a handful of features that you’ll find missing from the platform. That’s where their app store comes into play.

Their app store has an extensive number of third-party plugins and widgets that enable you to add more functionality to your online store. These apps can expand your marketing initiatives, improve your customer service, increase your advertising, and integrate with a point of sale system in your brick-and-mortar store.

Some of the available apps are free while others are premium. Even though some have an associated monthly fee, I think these apps are well worth the money and can bring a tremendous improvement to your online store.

For instance, adding a live chat plugin to your store can improve your overall customer service and answer a lot of the pre-sale questions whereas product reviews can build trust and improve conversions. Integrating with one of their email marketing apps can help you create an efficient marketing strategy.

Here are some of the third-party apps that you can find in their app store:

Mobile ecommerce

If you don’t have a mobile user-friendly store, you’re losing money. Mobile ecommerce gives you a wider customer reach, a convenient shopping experience, and a competitive edge.

Thankfully, the Bigcommerce platform is compatible with most mobile devices and tablets. Their templates are responsive and will automatically resize and adjust on mobile devices.

Their admin dashboard is responsive as well so you’ll be able to manage your store on the go. You can also download the official Bigcommerce app for your mobile device.

Support and resources

Support availability is vital for a smooth online business without any hiccups, especially in the beginning and during the holiday season. Their support team is available 24/7 and reachable via live chat, phone, and standard email ticketing.

You’ll also receive free access to support guides, tutorials, and an active community forum where you can get in touch with other Bigcommerce members.

For the ones that are new to ecommerce or creating an online store for the first time, you’ll be able to visit Bigcommerce University and further your ecommerce knowledge.

Bigcommerce University is the place to learn all about ecommerce by watching video tutorials on building your online store, attracting customers, creating buyers, and building customer loyalty.

Hosting, security, and backup options

Bigcommerce is a hosted ecommerce platform, so hosting is included with each plan. You don’t need to purchase a separate hosting account, but I do recommend purchasing your own domain name from NameCheap (custom domain names build your brand, look professional, and are easier for your customers to remember).

My store loaded in 1.02 seconds for the initial visit. Repeat visits bring the load time to less than one second. Anyways, here’s a screenshot of my store performance (tested with Pingdom):

Bigcommerce Performance

The enabled Bigcommerce CDN makes stores run faster and smoother. Websites that load under three seconds have plenty of advantages over websites that take longer to load. For example, fast performing websites get more sales, keep their customers happy, and rank higher on search engines.

Bigcommerce uses the same security technology that a lot of the banks use to protect all of the information transmitted through your store. They’re also Level 1 PCI Compliant so hackers don’t have a chance here.

You can also create a backup file of your orders, products, product images, customers, and theme customizations that you can import at your discretion.

Bigcommerce pros

  • The platform is ridiculously easy to use without having to know any code.
  • You aren’t limited on what you’ll be able to design.
  • Their platform has a comprehensive list of built-in features that are second to none.
  • You’ll get unlimited core features that won’t have a limit on the amount of traffic you can receive, the amount of products you can add, and the amount of product images you can upload.
  • Strong importing and exporting tools for transferring your store or adding products in bulk.

Bigcommerce cons

  • You’ll be charged 1.5% in transaction fees on the $29.95/month (Standard) plan only. Bigcommerce no longer charges transaction fees.
  • Their platform doesn’t have a built-in recurring billing system.

Is Bigcommerce the ecommerce platform I’ve been looking for?

If you made it this far, you have a pretty good chance of partnering and being successful with Bigcommerce. Bigcommerce is an all-in-one top ecommerce platform that’s flexible and easy to work with. It has minor drawbacks that aren’t going to necessarily affect the way you run your online business.

Their stores load fast and are equipped with the necessary features needed to run an online store. When compared to their competition, Bigcommerce has a competitive pricing structure, making their platform very affordable.

If you’re looking for a complete ecommerce platform with minor setbacks, go with Bigcommerce.

So is their platform for you? I think so.
